STEVE VAI’s ‘Modern Primitive’ + ‘Passion And Warfare 25th Anniversary Edition’ To Be Released In June

 

Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Steve Vai‘s “Modern Primitive / Passion And Warfare 25th Anniversary Edition”, a celebratory 2CD collection of classic tracks and previously unreleased music, on Friday, June 24.

Steve Vai and Legacy Recordings are commemorating the 25th anniversary of “Passion And Warfare” with a special 2CD edition of the album which includes the first-ever release of Vai‘s “Modern Primitive” songs and recordings. Based on song sketches and works-in-progress penned and recorded by Vai following the release of “Flex-Able”, his debut album, in January 1984, the music on “Modern Primitive” has been completed by Vai for release as a full album disc and the second CD is the bonus remastering of the “Passion And Warfare 25th Anniversary Edition”.

“The music on ‘Flex-Able’ is so vastly different from ‘Passion And Warfare’, one could wonder if the same guy actually made both records,” Steve writes in his liner notes for the collection. “‘Modern Primitive’ is the missing link between these two records. It’s sort of Cro-Magnon Vai.”

Newly remastered from the original analog tapes, the “Passion And Warfare 25th Anniversary Edition” disc includes, as bonus tracks, four previously unreleased recordings from the “Passion And Warfare” sessions.

“Modern Primitive / Passion And Warfare 25th Anniversary Edition” is being released as a 2CD physical collection while each disc will be available as a separate title on all digital platforms.

The 2CD “Modern Primitive / Passion And Warfare 25th Anniversary Edition” will be housed in a 4-panel soft-pack with a 20-page “Modern Primitive” booklet and a 24-panel “Passion And Warfare” poster fold.

In addition to the first-time release of his “lost” “Modern Primitive” music, composer/producer and electric guitar virtuoso Steve Vai will celebrate the 25th anniversary of his landmark album “Passion And Warfare” with a world tour starting on May 28 featuring — for the first time ever in concert — full performances of his groundbreaking instrumental rock masterpiece in its entirety.

“Performing this record from top to bottom (with some very special surprises in the works) is something I’ve always dreamed of doing,” Vai said. “There are songs here I’ve never performed before, and I’m delighted that 25 years after its release, I feel as though my guitar chops are as much up to the task as ever before.”

Often cited as one of the greatest and most influential instrumental rock guitar albums ever recorded, Vai‘s “Passion And Warfare” was originally released through Relativity/Epic in September 1990 and has been certified gold by the RIAA. Inspired by a series of dreams Vai had experienced as a young man, “Passion And Warfare” has been described by the artist as “Jimi Hendrix meets Jesus Christ at a party that Ben Hur threw for Mel Blanc.” Recorded at The Mothership, Vai‘s home studio in the Hollywood Hills, “Passion And Warfare” includes the classic track “For The Love Of God”, cited as one of the best solos of all time in a Guitar World magazine reader’s poll.

Ritchie Blackmore Return to Rock

After nearly two decades of playing Renaissance music, Ritchie Blackmore made his long-awaited return to rock with a new lineup of Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow last night (June 17). You can watch video above and below.

The concert took place at the Monsters of Rock Festival in St. Goarshausen, Germany. He wasted no time in going back to one of the most celebrated moments in his catalog, opening up with Deep Purple‘s “Highway Star” (embedded above). Even though he said back in February that he was considering 70 percent of the songs to be from Rainbow, according to Setlist.fm, the 13-song set was split almost evenly between Deep Purple (six songs) and Rainbow (seven). Rainbow got the edge thanks to a cover of Russ Ballard’s “Since You Been Gone” that appeared on their 1979 album, Down to Earth. He closed with another Deep Purple classic, “Smoke on the Water.” Setlist also notes that “Soldier of Fortune,” “Sixteenth Century Greensleeves,” “Lazy” and “Burn” were written on the setlist.

Blackmore’s band consists of two veterans of Blackmore’s Night, drummer David Keith and bassist Bob Nouveau, and keyboardist Jens Johansson. Handling vocal chores, and thus given the task of replicating parts made famous by three legendary singers — Ian Gillan, David Coverdale and Ronnie James Dio — is Ronnie Romero.

Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow will perform again tonight, the installment of the Monsters of Rock in Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany. Next Saturday, June 25, they will play a show at the Genting Arena in Birmingham, England. He is not planning on recording or touring beyond these three dates. “I thought I’d just get back to playing the old songs one more time,” he said last month. “My commitment lies with Blackmore’s Night – this is just a few dates for fun.” Blackmore’s Night are touring Europe and the U.S. in July and August.

The making of ……. “Air Ekseption”

 

 

 

I made a cover of “Air” version of Ekseption. In case you don’t know, originally it is a number of Bach (BWV 1068).

However, the famous Dutch rockband made a transition of this classical song into a pop/rock number. Rick van der Linden is a well noticed keyboard player who made 99% of the arrangement. You’ll hear drums, bass, piano, clavecymbal, organ etc.

I made my own arrangement and uses the following instruments of plugins:

RITCHIE BLACKMORE “THE RITCHIE BLACKMORE STORY”

On 06 November 2015, Eagle Rock Entertainment released “The Ritchie Blackmore Story”. This is a simultaneous release on DVD, Blu-ray and digital formats and Deluxe Edition. Without doubt one of the all-time great guitar players, Ritchie Blackmore hardly ever does interviews but has granted extraordinary access for the creation of this truly revealing programme and talks in great depth about his life and career.

The amazing Deluxe Edition contains the DVD of “The Ritchie Blackmore Story”, the DVD of “Live In Tokyo” and 2CDs of “Live In Tokyo” all contained in a 60 page 12” x 12” hardback photobook with a black and silver front cover. “Live In Tokyo” is the first official DVD & CD release of the 1984 concert by Rainbow from Tokyo’s famous Budokan. It was to be the last Rainbow concert before Ritchie Blackmore & Roger Glover went on to reform Deep Purple.

From his pop roots with The Outlaws and his many session recordings in the sixties, through defining hard rock with Deep Purple and Rainbow in the seventies and eighties and on to the renaissance rock of Blackmore’s Night, Ritchie has proved that he is a master of the guitar across a multitude of styles. Rule Number 1 — There are No Rules

So you decided to play electric guitar. Once you get a guitar and an amp, the next step is to explore effects. Effects pedals can be separated into groups based on their functions. Understanding the different pedal groups is the key to getting the best sound when chaining them together. The largest pedal group is probably overdrives and distortions, and BOSS currently makes 16 different pedals in this category. For our example pedal board, we’ll pick the ST-2 Power Stack. Another category with many choices ismodulation.These are effects like flanger, phaser, chorus, tremolo, and others. Let’s use the most versatile of these—the BF-3 Flanger. Another group is ambience effects, such as delays and reverbs. We’ll use one of each: a DD-7 Digital Delay and the FRV-1 ’63 Fender Reverb.

There are some pedal effects that can add notes or alter the pitch of what you’re playing. For want of a more esoteric name, we’ll call these “pitch-altering” pedals. From this category, let’s throw in a BOSS OC-3 Octave. BOSS also has a few

BOSS ST-2 Power Stack guitar effects pedalpedals that make your instrument sound like some other instrument. The AC-3 Acoustic Simulator will do the job. Some effects change your sound with filtering. This effect type can be used in different places in the signal path, so we’ll use the GE-7 Graphic EQ. A few BOSS effects defy categorization, but are nevertheless very useful in any signal path. The most common of these is the CS-3 Compression/Sustainer. Loopers fall into this category also, so let’s add an RC-3 Loop Station to the mix. And you might want the NS-2 Noise Suppressor to kill the noise in your rig, so let’s add that in, too. What about a tuner? The TU-3 is the most popular pedal tuner in the world.

So, where does each pedal go in the signal path? Here are some tips to keep in mind before you start plugging pedals together:

How to Chain Your Guitar Effects Pedals – Part 2

Rule 1—There are no rules. The sound you’re after might not be made by what we could call the appropriate or logical signal path, but that’s not always the issue. The issue is this: what does it sound like? If it makes the sound you’re after, then it’s rightalthough, you may have to do something about the noise. Traditional pedal board arrangements were designed for certain reasons, and keeping the noise down is one biggie. Following the principles of how sound is made in physical space is another (see Rule 4 coming up). But the final choice is yours. As a very wise man said: if it works, don’t fix it.

Rule 2—Some pedal types work better in certain parts of the signal path than in others. Octave pedals or tuners, for example, don’t work as well with a distorted signal as with an undistorted signal, so they should be placed before the distortion.

Rule 3—Noise can be a problem, particularly with high-gain distortion sounds. Pedals that can add volume—such as compressors, wahs, EQs, and overdrive/distortions—will also amplify any noise created by the effects placed before them.

Rule 4—Taking sound-making devices like stompbox pedals out of the equation, there’s an order to the way sounds naturally occur in physical space. For example, guitar amp distortion is made in physical space by turning an amp up enough to cause its circuits to overload, and any echo you might hear happens after the distorted sound hits walls or ceilings and bounces back to your ears. Therefore, logic says that your reverb and/or delay pedals should be last in the signal path, since that is how the sounds they produce actually occur in three-dimensional space.

In keeping with these rules—okay, they aren’t really rules, so let’s compromise and call them “guidelines”—here are some essential concepts for lining your pedals up:

  • Pedals that amplify or add noise should go near the beginning of the signal path. This includes overdrive/distortion effects, compressors, and wah pedals. If they’re later in the signal path, they will amplify the noise of everything before them, which can be difficult to control.
  • Pedals that produce tone go before things that modify tone. This is logical, because you want to create your basic sound first, then tweak it with some kind of modifying effect. For example, this means that overdrives go before chorus effects.
  • Pedals that create ambience go last. This goes back to the “how does sound actually occur in physical space” idea. So, delay and reverb should go after all other effects.

de “LIJST DER LIJSTEN” (Top ….. allertijden)

logoInmiddels zijn de stofwolken van de afgelopen feestdagen weer zo’n beetje opgetrokken. Slechts herinneringen blijven over en zo nu en dan mijmer je nog even na over deze periode.
Zo zat ik vanavond te mijmeren over de “lijst der lijsten”. En eerlijk gezegd ontsproot in mij een gevoel van ergernis.

Toen ik jong was (en ja, niet alles van vroeger was beter) lagen we voor de radio met een lijst van de Top 100 allertijden naast ons. Maar deze “lijst der lijsten” was kennelijk niet genoeg en werd via een Top 200, een Top 500, een Top 1000 opgerekt tot een Top 2000; de lijst der lijsten.
Andere radiozenders hebben inmiddels begrepen dat na de kerst het aantal luisteraars daalt en zijn een offensief tegen het Radio2 geweld gestart. Zij zijn ook gestart met een “lijst der lijsten”. Arrow Rock begon eigenlijk in oktober al tijdens hun Rocktober met de Arrow Rock 500. Radio 10 Gold zend zijn top 4000 uit, Qmusic hun Q-top 1000 en Veronica doet er met zijn Top 1000 een schepje bovenop.

“Mind you”, om goed op de hoogte te blijven moet je dus als “echte muziekliefhebber” of een goeie draaiknop op de radio hebben of meerdere radio’s aan hebben staan zodat je simultaan alle “lijst der lijsten” kunt beluisteren.

Dat gezegd hebbende erger ik me eigenlijk nog meer aan de inhoud. Neem nou Armand. Wie zou hem bij leven nou een plaats op nummer 90 toebedelen. Daar moest hij eerst het tijdelijke met het eeuwige voor verwisselen om een sprong vanaf plaats 1189 te maken. Maar was dat ook al niet eerder het geval met Ramses Shaffy? Na zijn overlijden op 1 december 2009 vonden de “echte muziekkenners” dat hij niet op plaats 213 moest staan, maar op nummer 10. (wanneer sloot het stemlokaal in 2009?). Inmiddels is Ramses alweer terug gezakt naar plaats 155. Kennelijk vonden de “echte muziekkenners” hem toch ook weer niet zo goed. Ik ben benieuwd op welke plaats we Armand volgend jaar terug zullen vinden.

Maar als klap op de vuurpijl van 2015 voor mij was toch Adele met Hello. Zij kwam vanuit het niets op plaats nummer 23 binnen. Even voor de duidelijkheid; het nummer is op 23 oktober uitgebracht en de stembus voor de Top 2000 sloot op 27 november. De “echte muziekkenners” wisten dus het nummer binnen een maand op een dermate waarde te schatten om het op plaats 23 te zetten.
Zelf vermoed ik dat alle medewerkers van XL Recordings (platenlabel van Adele) tijdens het online bestellen van zijn/haar kerstpakket ook even op Adele moesten stemmen. Zo kom je er uiteindelijk ook. Natuurlijk, smaken verschillen, maar is dit nummer dan direct plaats #23 waardig? Wellicht zit er een stevige marketingmachine achter die presentator Mathijs van Nieuwkerk en popprofessor Leo Blokhuis niet meer in de hand hebben.
Ik hou inmiddels ook m’n hart vast als de marketingmachine van Justin Bieber op volle toeren begint te draaien. Zou Gordon dan toch gelijk hebben als hij spreekt over een platenmaffia.

Ik kijk echter nu al uit naar de laatste twee weken van 2016. Ik ga er echt weer zitten om naar mijn “lijst der lijsten” te luisteren: mijn Spotify Afspeellijst.

Steve Vai’s Bo is back

SteveGreat news everyone: Bo, Steve’s mirrored JEM that went missing this past weekend, has been found left in the bushes at the gate on Steve’s property. We do not have any more details on how it got there and will perhaps forever remain a mystery. The entire Vai camp is grateful for all the amazing outpouring of support we have seen regarding this issue over the last week. Bo is now ready for 2016 and all the notes she will once again be singing from Steve’s fingers and soul.

Steve Vai’s Guitar Stolen Outside L.A. Benefit Concert

Steve Vai‘s “Bo” guitar was stolen outside a benefit concert today (Dec. 12) for Tony MacAlpine. Guitar tech James Shotwell is now offering a reward.

The instrument, a mirror Ibanex JEM with blue LEDs pictured above, vanished from the loading area of the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles. Vai is appearing there with Zakk Wylde, Billy Sheehan, Derek Sherinian, Mike Portnoy and John 5.

Vai’s Facebook page includes detailed information on “Bo,” including distinctive wear marks. “This is a one-off, irreplaceable guitar,” says Shotwell, who has worked for Dio Disciples’ Craig Goldy and the Lucky Strike Live venue in Los Angeles. “Anyone sees this guitar, contact me immediately! This isn’t hard to spot and is very unique.”

This wouldn’t be the first guitar Vai has lost. In fact, his web site lists a number of missing axes that have been “stolen, misplaced or loaned and never returned” – including a guitar used in the “Yankee Rose” video during Vai’s tenure in David Lee Roth‘s band, a black Ibanez loaned to a second studio engineer, and others.

MacAlpine, who is fighting colon cancer, has previously worked in bands with Vai (The Breed) and Sherinian (Planet X) as well as Portnoy and Sheehan (PSMS). Sheehan and John 5 are also Roth band alumni. Tragically, MacAlpine’s wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in June.
